Two Captive-bred Great Indian Bustards Released Into the Wild in Desert National Park
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released two captive-bred male Great Indian Bustards (GIB) into the wild at Sam in the Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, on 4 October 2026. The release marks the move of India's GIB conservation programme from captive breeding to rewilding, the result of more than a decade of work at the conservation breeding centres at Sam and Ramdevra. A new rewilding aviary was also inaugurated, and a similar 'jumpstart' effort is under way in Kutch, Gujarat. For exams: the GIB is critically endangered, is the state bird of Rajasthan, and is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
