CHIME Telescope Detects Glow of Hydrogen From 5 Billion Years Ago, With Indian Researchers
The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope, in a collaboration that includes researchers from India's Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, has made its first standalone detection of the faint glow of hydrogen from when the universe was about five billion years old. CHIME was built to map hydrogen gas in the early universe so that astronomers can measure cosmic expansion and study dark energy, the force thought to be making the universe expand ever faster. The result points to a faster, cheaper way to study dark energy and was published in The Astrophysical Journal. For exams: RRI is an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology.
