Cabinet Approves Rs. 10,000 Crore for SME Growth Fund
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Government of India's commitment of Rs. 10,000 crore towards the SME Growth Fund (SGF), announced in Para 28 of the Union Budget 2026-27. The money will go to an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) set up under the SGF framework to make direct equity investments in Small and Medium Enterprises. Existing equity funds mostly back early-stage and micro enterprises, so the SGF aims to fill the gap in long-term growth capital for SMEs looking to scale, adopt technology, expand abroad or make acquisitions. The majority of the allocation will go to manufacturing-focused SMEs, and the fund will also consider SMEs in industrial clusters in Tier II and Tier III cities. For exams: the SME Growth Fund has a government commitment of Rs. 10,000 crore and was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27.
