Government Says India's Satellite Communication Framework Is Fair and Non-Discriminatory

Responding to a social media post questioning the fairness of India's regulatory framework for satellite communication services, the Government said it has put in place a fair and non-discriminatory authorisation framework for all telecommunication services, including satellite communication. Telecom licences have been granted to three providers of Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) services based on non-geosynchronous orbit satellites. Every licensee must demonstrate compliance with security conditions to ensure the safety of users and their data; this security assessment is under way for all three licensees. Once it is completed for a licensee, it can seek assignment of spectrum. The Government said all three entities are at broadly the same regulatory stage, so claims of unfair treatment are baseless.
