Government Caps Trade Margins on Non-Scheduled Cancer Medicines at 30% of MRP
The Government has approved a cap on the margins charged in the supply and sale of non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs, limiting them to 30% of the Maximum Retail Price. The measure is expected to cut prices by up to 70% and save cancer patients about Rs. 2,500 crore a year. Scheduled cancer medicines already have government-set ceiling prices; the new decision extends price protection to medicines outside that list. An expert committee under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) will finalise the list of medicines, after which the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) will issue the notification. NPPA found that non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines carry an average mark-up of about 170%, and 700% or more in some cases. The move builds on February 2019, when NPPA capped trade margins on 42 non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs, cutting MRPs by up to 91%. For exams: NPPA fixes drug prices under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013; it works under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
